A snowmobile operator, with one passenger, was riding the power lines between Redman Road and Lake Road South when the sled broke through ice and sank to the top of the windshield. The operator phoned for assistance while one rider began to walk back to Redman Road. The individual walking soon became bogged down in another deep water area along the trail.

The Brockport Fire Department responded to the call of a snowmobile in the water in the area of Beadle Road and Redman Road. Squad 2347 responded with Brockport’s off-road ATV and Rescue 238 responded with a water rescue team. 2C13 assumed command and 2C33 assumed operations. 2C13 requested off road vehicles from Clarendon and Walker to the scene to locate on Route 19 where it was determined to be the best access to the incident. Several ambulances were requested to both locations as rehab units for victims and firefighters and sheriff’s deputies who had operated in the freezing waters.

2C33, along with several members of the department, began a long trek on the trail off Redman Road to locate the victims. They discovered the first victim hip-deep in water on the trail and escorted that victim back to Redman Road for transport to Lakeside for treatment for potential hypothermia. The driver of the snowmobile was found standing on the snowmobile seeking assistance out of the water up to his waist. The snowmobile operator was removed by the Clarendon ATV and also taken to Lakeside for further observation. The firefighters and sheriff deputies, who had trekked back into the incident, were brought out to the road on both the Clarendon and Walker ATV’s.

Both victims were placed in ambulances for transport to Lakeside within 45 minutes of the dispatch time. The victims seemed to alert and not injured in the sinking of their sled. The incident was closed out at approximately 16:15 hours. PHOTOS

On Monday afternoon, the Morton Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on Monroe Orleans County Road. 2C21 arrived on scene and reported a working fire and requested a mutual aid tanker from Hamlin along with mutual assistance companies from Kendall, one engine with manpower and Holley, one aerial as the RIT component. Also requested to the scene was a tanker from Kendall, a tanker from Hulberton, an engine from Hamlin for manpower, a second engine from Kendall to fill tankers and an engine from Brockport to assume the RIT assignment from Holley. Later in the incident a rescue from Brockport and a rescue from Hilton was requested to the scene for manpower relief during overhaul operations. 2C21 assumed command, 2C31 operations and 2C14 interior. 2C11 arrived and assumed manpower/accountability. Walker sent one engine to Morton and Carlton sent one engine to Kendall as fill-in companies. PHOTOS

Morton Engine 115 arrived, and located in the driveway after laying-in from the roadway. Two hand lines were pulled and Morton firefighters, assisted by Kendall and Hamlin firefighters, initiated an interior attack. While these firefighters were preparing to enter the structure, 2C31 used one hand line to knock down heavy fire on the B side exterior. A blitz line was stretched from Engine 115 and used periodically on this exterior fire until interior crews were able to gain control from the interior. A third hand line was stretched from Engine 115 to the rear of the structure and operated over a ladder into the second floor by Holley firefighters.

Engine 216 arrived shortly after Engine 215 and was backed into the driveway as the dump tank base pumper and took the supply line laid in by the first engine. As the tanker relay was being set-up, with Engine 115 running short on water, a second supply line was stretched and water from Hamlin’s tanker and then Kendall’s engine was utilized until Engine 216 became operational. The three tanker shuttle (Hamlin, Kendall and Hulberton), supplied by the Kendall engine, which took a plug across the street from the Morton Fire Station, was able to maintain sufficient water supply for fire ground requirements.

During overhaul operations, Holley’s aerial was located to the rear of the structure to assist in opening the roof which had been weakened by the interior fire and Morton rescue was placed on the D side to provide lighting to the interior as daylight diminished.

The fire had burned internally for some time before it discovered when it extended to the exterior and was seen by a neighbor. Due to this, and the age and construction of the building, the fire had time to travel through partitions into the attic and behind multiple ceilings. Firefighters quickly knocked down visible fire but kept finding hidden fire as they continued to open-up the second floor area. It was fortunate that the fire occurred on a holiday which increased available firefighters for a weekday, daytime fire and fortunate that the fire occurred during the day with occupants away from the structure. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Monroe County Fire Bureau.

The Holley Fire Department was dispatched to the Holley Hotel, next to their fire station, at approximately 2:40 PM on Saturday, the day before Christmas. Arriving firefighters observed heavy smoke from the structure and flames from the second floor A & D side (A - Thomas St., D - Public Square). Holley 1 assumed command and immediately requested additional companies to the scene.

Holley’s Quint 40 positioned on the A&D side of the structure and firefighters advanced two handlines into the building. The Holley interior teams pushed their way through heavy smoke up a stairway and down a hallway to the fire area and began to knock down the visible fire. The driver of the first due Engine 30, secured a supply line to the Quint 40 from a hydrant in front of the fire station, and then drove the engine around the block and took a plug across the public square from the fire building. A supply line was stretched to the fire building and later hooked into the Albion Quint 45.

Brockport’s Engine 233, with manpower, arrived followed in by Brockport’s Ladder 231. Holley’s Quint 40 placed its aerial to the second floor fire area and the Brockport Ladder 231 placed its aerial to the roof at the A/B side of the structure setting up in front of the fire station. Brockport firefighters took the roof but did not need open it due to the rapid control of the fire.

Clarendon’s Engine 30 arrived with manpower and Clarendon’s Quint 43 arrived and was directed to the rear of the structure to place its aerial to the second floor B/C side of the structure. Clarendon firefighters entered the second floor through a window at the tip of the aerial. Hulberton Engine 11 stretched a line from the Clarendon Quint 43 to a hydrant on South Main.

Albion’s Quint 45 arrived and set-up on the D side of the structure, in the public square, and raised its aerial to the roof where the parapet was opened to check for extension due to smoke showing. Medina’s Ladder 40 arrived and was staged and Clarendon Rescue 66 arrived and was used to fill air bottles. Kendall’s Engine 34 arrived as the fill-in company, and staged in the public square as the fire station was blocked due to fire fighting operations.

The fire building was occupied at the time of the fire and firefighters assisted at least five residents from the apartment complex. One resident made his way to a back fire escape where he collapsed from smoke inhalation. Holley EMS personnel, Monroe Ambulance personnel and Clarendon firefighters initiated patient care and brought the victim to ground level by using a stokes basket and a rope system due to the weak condition of the fire escape. The patient was transported to Strong in serious condition.

Due to the amount of smoke and visible fire upon arrival, the potential for a major structure fire and potential of extension into the village block was quite possible and therefore dictated the need for a large fire response. The aggressive interior attack was however successful in knocking down the fire and the major damage was held to two rooms with no extension from the immediate fire area. The Red Cross provided housing for residents due to the need to replace windows and to bring building systems back on line. It appeared that the building could be placed back into operation after some repairs are completed. PHOTOS

Brockport firefighters responded to a report of a house fire at 15 Coleman Creek Road in the Village of Brockport with smoke and flames showing shortly after noon today (11/24). First arriving personnel found smoke coming from the front of the structure and quickly extinguished what was described as clothes burning in one of the bedrooms. The cause of the fire is under investigation. A quick response by the firefighters made for short work, and the home suffered very little damage as a result of the quick and efficient efforts of the Volunteers. PHOTOS

Brockport Fire Department took recent delivery of a brand new 2011 Chevy Tahoe. This vehicle is assigned to the Deputy Chief (2C23). The vehicle is outfitted with a custom rear cabinet as well as a custom “slick-top” warning package provided by WNY Emergency Vehicle Solutions. PHOTOS VIDEO

Unlike other response vehicles, this one features some new technology. A device called the Rumbler (manufactured by Federal Signal) provides secondary audible warning by using low frequency tones. Low frequency tones have the distinct advantage of penetrating solid materials allowing vehicle operators and nearby pedestrians to feel the sound waves of the Emergency Vehicle Siren. This will help improve safety for citizens and responders as well as improve siren effectiveness.

The Rumbler is particularly effective when used in dense urban environments with heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic. With Brockport being a college town, this device will definitely be beneficial.
