2011 Lake Effect Firefighter Ski Race Announced "Downhill Skiing to
Support an Uphill Climb"
Brother and Sister Firefighter,
The present and future of our heritage as firefighters lies in the youths
that are approaching the age of adolescence. The role we play as
firefighters and mentors is to nurture, train and attempt to instill the
best examples possible. Being a proactive part of the Western New York
Community, the North Boston Fire Company has joined an alliance with the
Kids Escaping Drugs Campaign for the 13th Annual HoliMont SkiScape/ Lake
Effect Firefighters Ski Race on Sunday, January 2, 2011 from 8AM-4:30PM at
the HoliMont ski resort in Ellicottville, NY.
The Kids Escaping Drugs Campaign was created in 1987 with the sole
purpose to raise, manage and distribute funds for the development and
support of facilities, education and prevention programs for adolescents and
their families in Western New York suffering from alcohol and drug
dependency/addiction.
This event promises to accomplish many goals, the most significant being
the camaraderie and public interaction with the proud tradition of the fire
service, while raising funds to help curb an out of control epidemic that
directly affects our livelihood as firefighters.
So, mark the date now, and please tell 100 of your closest friends! If
you don't have a team of 4, call on neighbors for mutual aid, or register
single and we will place you in a team. Come join hundreds of firefighters
from all over WNY, Southern Ontario, Rochester and the Hudson Valley in
competing in this years Lake Effect Firefighter Ski Race!
What could be more fun then to see four firefighters wearing full
protective equipment, on skis, linked together by carrying a 50ft length of
1 3/4" hose through a race course? Fastest Team wins and spills are
frequent.
PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED: Registration Form Download on
www.northbostonfire.com (Complete list of rules will be furnished upon
registration)
Donation for each team member is $60 which provides:
¢Lift ticket to ski at HoliMont ($55 value) ¢Bag of goodies ¢Continental

On October 21st at 23:03 Hours, Hulberton with automatic assist from Holley
for the Ladder and Albion for the FAST was dispatched for the possible
structure fire at A&M automotive on Fancher Road at Rt. 31 with explosions.
Another update reported a vehicle into the building, followed by another
update of several vehicles on fire. In the end, the building was not
involved, what did happen was a vehicle traveling Eastbound on 31 failed to
stop for the sign at the extension to Fancher Road, taking out the stop sign
and struck a parked tow truck located outside the fence. The impact moved
the tow truck into the fenced in are and in close proximity to other
vehicles. A fire then erupted spreading to two boats and two other vehicles.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Additional support was called
in from Clarendon, Albion and Kendall. Thanks to all that helped with this
incident.

Earlier this evening, Holley Fire Department was dispatched for the Fumes
inside a residence at 35 Frisbee Terrace. Further investigation found fumes
(possibly paint thinner) emanating from the sewer. After monitoring LEL &
CO, Holley 2 made the decision to call Clarendon (1 Rescue) and Hulberton (1
Pumper) to respond in service and stage in the former Jubilee parking lot.
Various locations were monitored periodically. After approval from the sewer
treatment plant, trucks were placed at various manholes and simultaneously
vented and flushed the sewer system for a period of time. Operations were
ceased and readings again taken. Readings were within acceptable limits and
assignment was placed in service. The DEC was notified and arrived at the
scene to investigate. He will return in the morning to work with treatment
plant personnel for further action.

A On October 4th at approximately 9pm, a driver of a pick-up truck failed
to stop at the end of Norway Road and plunged several feet out into Lake
Ontario. The driver then exited the vehicle, climbed onto shore and reported
the incident to Orleans County Fire Control. Orleans County Sheriffs were
dispatched along with the Kendall Fire Department Ambulance. 2C31 also
responded and requested a Morton response to check out the vehicle for other
occupants and to assist in the vehicle recovery. Kendall EMS personnel
checked out the patient who was released with little injury.
Morton Rescue 218 responded and set-up lighting, Squad 217 responded with
water rescue equipment and Engine 215 responded with additional resources.
2C21 assumed operations command.
A water rescue team was established under the direction of 2C31 and

The ECD was notified of smoke coming from a home at 3848 Lake Road from a
passerby who noticed the smoke condition. The Brockport Fire Department was
dispatched at 11:06 AM. 2C13 and 2C23 arrived on scene at 11:12 and 2C13
confirmed a working fire, and then updated the incident to a working cellar
fire. Five children and a parent who were in the structure were advised of
the fire and evacuated from the building.
Engine 2325 arrived at 11:13 and positioned in front of the structure.
Engine 232 dropped a supply line and proceeded to a hydrant north of the
structure. Truck 231 positioned in the driveway of the structure and raised
the aerial for roof operations. All Brockport apparatus responded with
manpower and equipment.
On the report of a working fire, Hamlin was requested with an engine,
Holley with a quint for RIT operations and Morton with a rescue as the air
unit. All three mutual aid companies supplied additional manpower companies.
An aerial from Spencerport and engines from Bergen and Clarendon filled-in
to cover the Brockport response area.
An initial exterior attack was made through a basement window and then
Brockport fire fighters entered the basement from the exterior of the
structure. The firefighters had to move the line through a kitchen, make a
90 degree turn down a narrow hallway to reach the room of origin thorough
heavy smoke conditions. This was accomplished and the fire was knocked down.
A second line was charged and a second Brockport company relieved the
initial crew and cleared the basement of smoke and confirmed there was no
extension.
Following fire investigation, firefighters completed overhaul and all
companies returned to service at approximately1:30 PM. The cause of the fire
has not yet been determined.

property owners. All vehicles were off the road and with the Eagle Harbor
Road bridge being closed, the decision was made to allow traffic to pass.
Mercy Flight was requested and responded with a 13 minute ETA to the landing
zone approximately one half mile east of the scene. COVA transported one
patient to Medina Memorial by and the other injured patient to the landing
zone where the patient was then transferred to Mercy Flight for

PLEASE NOTE:
I am making changes to how the training schedule is posted. There are
several reasons the main is simplicity in maintaining multiple websites
using one source file. Changes you will see are multiple county training
listings with the host site being on top. For example, The Orleans site will
have Orleans followed be neighboring counties. The Genesee site will have
Genesee training listed first followed by neighboring counties, and so on
and so forth. Clicking on any hyperlinked class title will take you to that
host county website for full class details, including the correct EMO office
to call for scheduling. Another change is any STATE
classes will be listed in red, EMS classes in
green and all other such as county offered or
other FD offered classes in light blue. I hope these changes will
make it easier for you as well as for me.
My plan is to do the same for the events page as well. Any questions or
problems, please drop me an email. Thanks, Ralf.

Early this morning the Holley PD doing a routine drive on the canal
bank found a bicycle, beer cans, fishing poles and other articles. While
finding no persons this initiated a search for a person(s). It was noted
earlier in the evening there were two individuals in that area, so the
search became more involved. Holley Fire responded with their boat as well
as requests for additional boats from Hulberton, Brockport and
Carlton. Clarendon was requested for the ARGO off Road vehicle. The State
Police helicopter was also requested for aerial support. Heavy rains during
the search hampered efforts and several departments were released. Divers
were to start a search at daybreak. It is reported that the owner of said
articles returned this morning to retrieve them. He had left them there last

On May 26th and 28th a Tanker Operations class was held at the Medina
Fire Dept taught by State Fire Instructor Larry Babcock. The purpose of the
class was to review the basics of tanker operations and new techniques for
improving tanker operations and efficiency. The program started out with 3
hours of classroom that review case studies of tanker operations at fires
along with the proper set up of both the fill site and the off loading or
dump sites and how to improve their efficiency. Also other uses for the
tankers were talked about.
The class concluded with the hands on evolutions of setting up the dump
site with the draft engine at the “scene” being supplied by 3 dump tanks on
the ground and supplying water to the Quint for master stream operations. A
fill site with 2 Engines drafting from the Erie Canal and supplying LDH to
the manifolds for tanker filling operations was established at ACME
manufacturing. During the evolution water was flowed for 2 hours with the
water being delivered to the dump site via 8 tankers. The dump site or
“scene” was the old Fisher Price complex. For 2 hours the flow at the scene
ranged from 960 GPM to 1220 GPM with water NEVER being lost at the scene.

Everyone involved with the class learned a lot and learned that if the
situation is there it can be done to supply a master stream with a tanker
operation and NOT run out of water.

Every village fire department worries about the dreaded block fire in
their downtown area. That concern was played-out in Brockport last evening
when an aerial ladder, three engines and a rescue were quickly on the scene
of a report of smoke in a building in a Brockport downtown section. An
interior line was quickly stretched and 2 plugs connected for heavy fire. An
engine from Hamlin and a Quint from Holley (RIT) were also quickly on Main
Street in support of the Brockport response.
The smoke was caused by a belt on a washing machine in a Laundromat
building and no water was flowed. Units were picking-up about 15 minutes
after the alarm sounded. While the fast and large response was not been
required at this incident, firefighters were well prepared for a potential larger fire encounter.

The family had retired for the evening when a smoke alarm sounded in the
front room of a 2 story farm home on West Kendall Road. Upon investigation,
the father had the family evacuate the premise and then went back into the
structure to investigate further. Observing a cherry red chimney pipe from a
wood stove, with smoke present, a call was made for a fire department
response.
Orleans Fire Control dispatched the Kendall Fire Department with these
additional units under mutual assistance: Carlton and Holley for manpower,
Albion for RIT and Morton for thermo imaging capability. Arriving on the
scene, Kendall One completed a size-up, determined that there was a small
fire confined to a front porch roof area and reduced the assignment to only
the Kendall and Morton Companies. Kendall’s rescue/engine arrived and
located in the driveway of the premise. Kendall’s tanker located in front of
the structure and Kendall’s second engine staged at a hydrant south of the
structure. Morton arrived and provided manpower, with the TIC, to the scene.
Fire in the wood stove was removed to the exterior and the roof of the
porch was opened exposing the fire which was quickly extinguished. The
chimney pipe was removed and further openings were made to ensure that any
extension was also extinguished preventing a rekindle. Companies began
picking-up at approximately 11:30 PM.

Holley firefighters were dispatched to a possible furnace problem on Park
Place. Holley 2 arrived on scene and reported heavy black smoke from the
chimney and requested the balance of the assignment starting a Pumper from
Brockport and Hulberton, a F.A.S.T. from Albion, Holley and Monroe
Ambulances. Upon investigation firefighters found a fire in a furnace which
self extinguished upon securing the fuel to the furnace. Firefighters were
on scene for about 45 Minutes.

assistance from Albion F.A.S.T., Brockport an engine, Holley Ambulance and
Monroe ALS were dispatched to a house fire on Franklin St. in the village.
