Morton Fire Department with automatic mutual assistance from Kendall
(1 Rescue/Pumper and 1 Tanker) along with Holley (1 F.A.S.T) were dispatched
for the report of a horse barn on fire at 2398 Norway Rd at approximately
01:30 hrs this morning. While enroute 2C31 declared a working fire with
numerous updates from Orleans County and a visible header in the sky. The
Holley F.A.S.T was changed to a request for Holley 40 (Quint), and
additional mutual – aid from Kendall (1 pumper for fill-site), Hamlin, and
Hulberton for tankers was requested. 2C21 and 2C31 arrived on location
simultaneously with a well involved large barn fire with exposure issues,
2C21 assumed command and 2C31 operations. Morton 215 arrived on scene and
was fed by Morton 216 which had established a water supply at the end of the
driveway. Kendall 34 was directed to protect an exposure on the opposite
side of the road where embers were landing on the roof a house and Holley
Quint 40 arrived on location and was placed into operation being supplied by
Morton 215. It took firefighters approximately 1 hour to bring the fire
under control, and is currently under investigation by the Orleans County
Emergency Management Office. Also operating at the scene was Morton Rescue
218 and Squad 217, Kendall Ambulance, Monroe Ambulance, Hamlin Tanker 246,
Hulberton Tanker 50, and Kendall pumper 33 at the fill site, while Hamlin

At approximately 5AM on Sunday December 20th the Albion Fire
Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 311 East State Street.
Albion Police arrived within minutes and confirmed a working fire in the
rear of the structure. Albion Fire Chief Eric Bradshaw arrived on location
and established command across the street. 311 E. State St is a two story
single family home which was vacant at the time. Chief Bradshaw reported a
working fire with significant exposure problem on the Delta side. Engine 35
arrived and was directed to use the hydrant at the corner of Bank St and
McKinstry Streets. Deputy Chief Sidari assumed Operations, working with
Captain Papponetti and Lt. Graham. The first hand line was applied to the
exposure on the Delta side. Additional hand lines were then laid into the
structure. Tower 45 arrived and was set up in front of the structure. The
exterior wall on the Alpha side was breached at the attic level, and the
elevated master stream was used to control a large fire in the attic.
Interior attack was suspended during this phase of the operation. Medina
Fire Department FAST team set up in the front yard. Engine 31 arrived and
assisted Engine 35 with protecting the exposure. Barre Fire Department
initially laid 5” LDH to a hydrant in order to feed Tower 45, but the line
was not used. A 3” line was laid from Engine 35 instead. Albion Fire Police
immediately closed the area to traffic. The Ladies Auxiliary shuttled
refreshments from the station to the scene throughout the incident. Carlton
Fire Department and Elba Fire Department (Genesee County) provided one
Engine each to fill the Albion Fire Station. Ridgeway and Hulberton Fire
Department’s had crews in quarters. COVA provided an ambulance for the
duration of the alarm. Despite the fact that the exposure on the Delta side
was approximately 4’ from the involved structure, it sustained no damage.
Orleans County Fire Investigators were on scene and determined the fire was
accidental.

Brockport. A second engine from Holley also responded.
Holley’s Quint took a plug and located in front of the structure. Ground
ladders were raised and two lines were stretched into the structure. The
roof was opened to clear the smoke filled attic where the fire had extended
from a wood stove chimney. Interior firefighters spread tarps and opened the
ceiling to get to the attic space. The fire was declared under control at

A lady checking a smoke condition in the first floor of a raised
ranch on Church Road last evening, called her husband to also check the
increasing amount of smoke coming from the area of a wood stove. After
considering alternatives, such as going out and buying additional fire
extinguishers, and after checking an exterior wall and noting ambers, the
homeowners wisely decided to call 911.
The Morton Fire Department was dispatched for a chimney fire along with a
mutual assistance engine from Hamlin and a RIT engine from Holley. Morton
Engine 215 was soon on the scene, took a plug for water supply and advanced
a hand line to the rear of the structure. 2C31 completed a size-up and
declared a partition fire involving a wood stove. 2C21 assumed command and
2C31 took operations with the assistance from 2C14.
Morton firefighters manned the hand line and cleaned out the fire in the
wood stove. Hamlin fire fighters were directed to open-up the exterior wall
around the chimney, as the interior wall was covered with a brick facade.
Holley staged in the front of the structure and Rescue 218 set-up lighting.
Upon opening the wall, active fire was found and quickly extinguished.
The firefighters and homeowners all agreed that if the fire condition had
occurred later in the evening, when the occupants were asleep, a major
working fire would have been the result.

At approximately 1:32 AM December 10th, Carlton was dispatched to a
possible structure fire at 1156 Waterport Road along with automatic mutual
aid from Lyndonville, Medina and Ridgeway. First arriving units found a
residential structure fully involved with an attached garage not yet
involved as well as an unattached barn. Within minutes of the arrival of the
first units, both the front and rear exterior walls collapsed outward. The
location was outside the hydrant district in Carlton so a tanker shuttle
operation was put in place. Additional mutual aid was requested and received
from Lyndonville, Ridgeway, Shelby, East Shelby, Albion, Barre, Kendall, FHM
and Holley. COVA also placed an ambulance on standby at the scene. The last
units left the scene at approximately 5:30 AM.

Last evening, the Morton Fire Department was conducting driver
training with in their fire district. Rescue 218 was near the intersection
of the Lake Ontario Parkway and the County Line Road when the department was
dispatched to a vehicle in the lake at the end of the County Line Road.
Rescue 218 was quickly on the scene. 2C31 confirmed that a vehicle was
resting in the water a short distance from the shore. The driver was
standing on shore.
The driver was checked for injuries and it was determined that no
injuries were suffered in the crash. Hilton’s 2619, filling-in at Hamlin
Ambulance, arrived on scene, a more complete medical evaluation was
conducted. The patient was released with a sign-off. Following Sheriff’s
investigation, the driver was released with no charges filed.
2C11 arrived with Engine 215 and assumed command. Rescue 218’s lighting
system was operated to assist in vehicle recovery. 2C31 donned water rescue
gear to assist the tow truck crew with the recovery of the vehicle from the
lake. This turned into a challenging task as the vehicle could not be towed
back along its original path due to a steep embankment and several large
boulders that the vehicle had traveled over. A snatch block was hooked to a
tree to drag the vehicle along the beach to a point where it could be towed
back to shore. Firefighters were able to pick-up and return to quarters at
approximately 9:30 PM.

We will be again soliciting F.D.'s for the following items for the
Wounded Warrior Program at Walter Reed Medical Center. Wounded vets are sent
back from forward operating bases with little to no clothing, and lack basic
necessities to complete their recovery after being injured in the line of
duty defending our nation and providing us the chance to do our life's
calling as firefighters. Gunnery Sergeant (ret.) James Lechner of the Chili
F.D. will be hand delivering these care packages on November 13th - just in
time for Thanksgiving. The veterans are huge supporters of the fire service
and would appreciate any station wear garb and swag you can muster. I will
arrange pickup or drop off of any donated items.
We will be delivering the care packages to Walter Reed the weekend of
Nov. 13 -14.
Items needed for the wounded warriors and their supporting families are:
a. fire dept. t-shirts, sweatshirts, knit hats and jackets, shorts
b. adult and child's jackets, hats, gloves and scarves
c. towels and wash cloths
d. toilet articles
NOTE: The reason for adult and child's winter clothing is that many of
the families live in the south and southwest and arrive at Walter Reed
without winter clothing, in their rush to support their loved ones.
Lets give them some comfort and our thanks.

In the early afternoon on September 25th, a storm passed through the
Kendall and Morton area knocking down trees and several power lines. The
Morton Fire Department was dispatched first for power lines down just south
of their fire station. This incident shut down power in the area. A few
minutes later the Kendall Fire Department was dispatched to home with tree
limbs down on a power line and smoke filling the structure.
Morton’s Rescue 218 took the first call to secure the scene of the wires
down on the County Line Road. Kendall responded to the second call with
Rescue Engine 34 and command confirmed smoke in the structure. Also
dispatched on the initial alarm was Holley for a Quint for manpower, Morton
with an engine for manpower and a TIC and Hamlin for a RIT team. All units
were quickly on the scene, as was National Grid, already working in the
area.
A thorough search for the source of the smoke condition was undertaken.
It was discovered that the wiring for an external light fixture, at the
garage grade door, was smoldering in the partition. The partition was opened
up and the area wet down using an extinguisher. Had the home owner not been
home, the wiring probably would have ignited surrounding materials and a
more serious fire would have resulted.

On August 20th at 12:45, The Morton Fire
Department was dispatched to a reported house fire 12:45 AM. 2C21 was first
on the scene and reported a working fire in a vacant structure. 2C11 arrived
and took command and 2C21 took operations. Due to the amount of fire showing
and the status of the building, a defensive, exterior fire fight was
declared. Mutual assistance was dispatched by Orleans Fire Control sending a
Kendall tanker and a Holley RIT team to the scene along with the Morton
response. Mutual aid requests brought additional companies to the scene: an
aerial from Holley, an engine from Kendall and an engine and rescue from
Hamlin. Fill-ins were supplied by Walker to Morton, Hulberton to Holley and
Carlton to Kendall. Medical and rehab operations were provided by a Kendall
ambulance crew and by a crew from Monroe.
PHOTOS
Morton’s Engine 215 took a hydrant on County Line Road, laid into the
scene and a blitz line and a hand line were put into operation. Morton’s 216
took a plug on Creek Road to protect an exposure on the C side of the
burning structure and supplied water to the Kendall engine. Kendall
firefighters advanced two lines to the C side of the structure. The Holley
aerial set up on the A-B side and was supplied by a third plug at the
intersection. Equipment and lighting was supplied by the Morton and Hamlin
rescues.
Fire on the C side of the building extended into the structure and
advanced through-out both floors and into the attic. Due to heavy smoke
conditions it was not possible to vent the roof and much of the fire burned
in inaccessible areas until enough of the roof was consumed to allow aerial
operations to douse the attic area. Hot spots throughout the structure
called for a lengthy overhaul operation. Mutual aid companies began to
pick-up at approximately 4:00 AM

The new date is tentatively
set for Saturday, October 3rd.
Departments are asked to consider setting up some type
of display to represent their department to the Public as well as to
fellow members of Fire Service. This could be apparatus, specialty
equipment, hand-outs for Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 4-10)
Displays for Volunteers, EMS Personnel, etc.,
information specific to your emergency response district – what’s your
agencies’ pet-peeve when you pull in to assist someone? Ie: lack of
information when you arrive, house numbers not clearly marked, traffic in
your way, etc.
Possible suggestions:
A piece of apparatus, a table, 2-3 personnel & hand
outs from each agency.
Demonstrations on use of fire extinguishers
Drawing for smoke detector, first aid kit
Watch for further details

A resident of a house on Close Hollow Drive awoke, investigated
unusual sounds and discovered fire. A pick-up truck next to the home was
fully involved and fire was extending on the exterior B side of the
structure. The ECD was notified and all other residents exited the
structure. Engine 243 and 242, Rescue 248, Squad 2418 from Hamlin and Engine
282 from Walker responded on the initial alarm.
2C24 arrived on scene and reported a working fire and special called
Morton’s Rescue 218 to the scene. 2C14 assumed interior operations. Arriving
engine 243 took a hydrant coming into the scene and located in front of the
building. One hand line was stretched to the fire area, was charged and all
exterior fire was knocked down. A second line was stretched to the front
door but was not charged. Interior crews checked for extension to the rooms
near the fire and into the attic; No extension was found.
Crews were picking-up in about 45 minutes and Walker relocated to the
Hamlin Fire Station to cover the Hamlin district until Hamlin’s apparatus
could be returned to an in-service status. A Fire Bureau investigator
arrived at the scene to determine the cause of the pick-up fire.

At approximately 4:30 PM, on Thursday July 30th, Albion Fire Department,
COVA and Medina ambulances, were dispatched, to the scene of a bus accident
at the Ingersoll St. crossing, of the Erie Canal in Albion, with the
crossing gate at the canal crossing. The report indicated that the school
bus from Ridge Road Express from Lockport New York had crossed the canal
bridge heading South when the crossing arm from the canal bridge, went down
prematurely, on the South end of the bridge, striking the buses front
left windshield. Twenty students were aboard, and 4 students were
transported to hospitals, for minor injuries due to the trauma of the
incident. A Triage was set up at the Albion Fire Department where students
were evaluated according to their injuries. Chief Eric Bradshaw of the
Albion Fire Department handled the situation in a very precise manner
making sure that no students were traumatized by the incident and that
everyone received proper care. Another bus from Ridge Road Express
transported the uninjured students to their appropriate destinations.

The Albion Fire Department was dispatched at 10:50 AM, to a residence at
13016 Ridge Road on the corner of Kenyonville Rd. The owner reported a
strong electrical smell at the residence. Medina FAST team and an engine
from Carlton were automatically dispatched as well. Upon arrival, Albion
Fire Chief Eric Bradshaw, called for mutual aid assistance from Barre fire
department to fill in the Albion station. An extensive search revealed
possible faulty electrical wires arcing and shorting in the walls causing
the odor. Firefighters ventilated the smoke from the residence while
National Grid disconnected the power. Due to the length of the call and the
weather conditions, Chief Bradshaw moved Barre to the scene to assist,
requesting Hulberton to fill in at Albion. The Red Cross was called to
assist the residents with housing. Route 104 was closed to through traffic
for several hours. The Albion Fire/Police provided traffic control and

Two hikers were rescued by the Albion Fire Department Off-Road Rescue
Team Saturday morning after one hiker reportedly fell from a tree. Orleans
County E-911 communications Center Dispatcher Wayne Litchfield answered the
911 call around 11:30am Saturday.
It was all a drill, but the skills displayed indicate a high degree of
ability and preparedness. Approximately five second into the call the
dispatcher informed the callers that he had pinpointed their location on the
map and help was on the way while simultaneously providing the Albion Fire
Department with turn by turn directions to within five feet of the hikers’
actual location. The Albion Fire Department splinted the hiker’s leg and
secured him to a backboard then placed him into their Ski Sled, with a
custom wheel kit for warm weather rescue, and transported the hiker out to
the roadway where a waiting ambulance was able to transport him to the
hospital. This was an actual training scenario practiced by the Albion Fire
Department Off-Road Rescue Team, led by Albion Fire Chief Eric Bradshaw,
along with the Orleans County E-911 Communications Center Dispatcher
Litchfield in preparation for this summers outdoor recreational adventurers.
Bradshaw and Litchfield have the following recommendations for people
enjoying the outdoors: Plan Ahead; learn about the area before you go out;
study the latest guidebooks and maps to the area; check weather reports
before you go out; don’t exceed your physical capabilities; tell someone
where you are going and when you plan to return; know the rules and
guidelines for appropriate behavior for the area you are visiting; and be
sure to carry a small first aid kit, water, a small shelter and matches to
build a campfire in the event you are forced to stay out overnight. The
highly trained and skilled dispatchers of the Orleans County E-911
Communications Center are able to track GPS enabled cell phones with the
centers high tech GPS tracking system. They recommend that outdoor
enthusiasts always carry a cell phone with a fully charged battery and help
is just a phone call away.

A series of fires in vacant buildings in Eastern Orleans County continued
Sunday morning. Sometime after midnight, the Kendall Fire Department was
dispatched to a structure fire at 16576 Kenmore Road along with mutual
assistance companies from Morton, Holley and Hamlin. The front section of a
vacant dwelling was completely in flames with extension further into the
structure. Kendall Rescue Engine 34 located just past the structure, took a
plug at that location, and a blitz line and attack line were stretched a
short distance to the burning building. Visible flames were darkened and the
hand line was placed in operation to complete overhaul operations. Kendall’s
tanker, and a second Kendall engine responded, but were not placed into
service. Hamlin Engine 242 was the first mutual assistance company on the
scene as they were in service in Holley, standing-by at the Holley Fire
Station covering for the Holley Carnival. Rescue 218 and Engine 215 from
Morton followed that Hamlin engine into the scene. Kendall command, noting
the quick fire containment and size of the structure, released The Hamlin
engine from Holley, the Hamlin engine responding as the RIT assignment and a
Holley Quint that was also on the road. Hamlin released a Walker engine that
was requested to fill-in Hamlin as both Hamlin’s engines were out of service
on mutual aid assignments. Kendall and Morton Firefighters remained on the
scene to complete overhaul and assist the Orleans County Fire Investigator
in his investigation.

mutual assistance company and responded with Rescue 248. Hamlin Ambulance
and Medic 42 were dispatched as the EMS portion of the call. No driver or
passengers were at the scene when the emergency crews arrived.
As companies were picking-up, a Deputy Sheriff noticed a person walking
along Route 18 approximately a mile from the scene. When this person noticed

The Brockport Fire Department was dispatched to a porch on fire on White
Road at 01:45 this morning. 2C13 arrived on the scene at 01:49 and declared
a working fire. Holley was requested to respond as a RIT Team and Hamlin was
requested to fill-in at Brockport. 2C23 took command of resources and 2C33
was assigned operations.
Engine 232 was on the scene at 01:55 AM and pulled just past the
structure, took a hydrant across from the structure and supplied four 1 ¾
hand lines for fire suppression. Ladder 231 followed Engine 232 into the
scene and raised the aerial to the roof. Ground ladders were set around the
structure. Engines 234 & 2325 and Rescue 238 also responded from the
Village. Hamlin and Clarendon were called to the scene for additional
resources and Spencerport and Walker responded to Brockport to cover the
district. Brockport and Monroe Ambulances set-up medical and rehab
operations and treated one occupant for chest pains.
The external fire was quickly knocked down and an interior attack on both
floors soon had all visible fire eliminated. Considerable overhaul was
undertaken due to the heavy extension into the structure. Crews went back
into service at 04:42 AM. The fire is under investigation by the Monroe
County Fire Bureau.

On Monday afternoon, at approximately 3 PM, Albion Fire Department
responded to the report of a motor home fire, near a residence at 14885
Holley Rd, in the Town of Albion. Upon arrival, Chief Eric Bradshaw reported
a fully involved motor home near a structure. The Holley FAST team was
called, along with mutual aid assistance from the Barre Fire Department. The
motor home, a 1999 Winnebago Grand Touring home, was parked adjacent to the
garage and home, owned by Robert and Dawn Trolley, at that address. Due to
the strong winds, at the time, the fire spread into a two car garage, which
was attached to a home. Firefighters quick action, brought the fire under
control, saving the home, from eminent danger, however the motor home was
destroyed and extensive damage to the garage incurred. The residence and
motor home, were not occupied at the time, and a passer-by reported the fire
to a neighbor, who called 911. Smoke from the fire, was reported to have
been seen, as far as Brockport. The motor home contained all of the
Trolley's possessions. Two Siamese cats, were also lost in the fire. Fire
investigators are currently investigating the cause of the fire. The Red

An occupant of the structure was taking a shower when the water supply
suddenly stopped. A second occupant went to the basement to check the
electrical breakers and discovered the basement filling with smoke. Orleans
County Fire Control was notified for a fire in a structure. Kendall Fire was
dispatched along with the following automatic mutual assistance requests:
Holley with a Quint, Morton with a rescue and an engine and Hamlin with a
RIT team. Walker was requested by Hamlin’s 2C14 to stand-by in quarters as
both Hamlin and Morton are currently operating with their second engines
out-of-service.
Kendall 1 arrived on the scene and confirmed smoke in the structure.
Kendall’s Engine 34 located in the driveway and a line was stretched and
charged. Kendall’s Tanker 52 arrived next and provided a supply line to the
first due engine. The other companies arrived and staged for support and the
RIT Team took up a position in the front of the structure after completing a
360 size-up of the building.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that a faulty pump motor
caused the electrical failure and smoke condition. Mutual assistance
companies were quickly released and the Kendall Fire Department cleared the
scene shortly after midnight.

Orleans County Fire Control dispatched the Hulberton
(Fancher-Hulberton-Murray) Fire Department to a reported structure fire,
along with Holley for an engine and Albion for a RIT Team on Wednesday
evening. Command arrived and requested Holley to respond with a Quint,
rather than the engine originally requested, and also requested a rescue
from Clarendon and Morton with manpower. Kendall was requested to fill-in
Hulberton. Command directed that all fire operations would be exterior only.
Hulberton’s first due engine laid LDH down a driveway behind structures
that set along the canal, to the rear of the fully involved vacant home. The
second due engine took a plug at the end of that driveway, and hooked-up for
big water supply. Three lines were pulled from the first engine, one being a
2 ½ line, which was quickly connected to a blitz nozzle. Using these three
lines, all visible fire was quickly knocked down.
The fire had extended into the attic area however, and due to the
condition of the building, along with the sustained fire damage, it was
determined that no interior or roof operations would be safe. The fire was
allowed to grow until it self ventilated and burned enough of the roof off
to allow aerial pipe operations from Holley’s Quint to blacken down the
attic fire. Once this was accomplished, further exterior operations, and
finally some cautious interior operations, were undertaken to completely
eliminate all hot spots.
Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours into Thursday
morning. This was the second vacant house fire in this part of Orleans
County in just over one week.

After being checked-out, the driver signed-off on further care. Had the
driver missed the tree, the truck probably would have traveled into the
lake. An incident such as this happened several years ago at this location
in which one person was seriously injured. This person reported that there
were two people in the vehicle and a lake search was undertaken. Using row
boats and pike poles, the lake was searched until morning. The next morning,
with available sun light, the second individual was recovered, under water,
down current from the scene. PHOTOS

Departments began Saturday morning conducting live fire training at a house
on Redman Road in the Brockport Fire District. Several evolutions were
completed before all units stood down from the drill and then reset
positions for a controlled burn of the structure. All water used in the
drill, and in the controlled burn, was supplied by tankers from Clarendon,
Hamlin & Kendall. One engine from Brockport and one engine from Holley
provided hand lines, tools and RIT equipment for the drill. Hamlin and
Walker provided engines for the protection of structures during the
controlled burn and one engine from Brockport, drafting from a dump tank,
supplied all lines for fire control during the controlled burn. Two engines
from Brockport and one engine from Holley were staffed and staged for

Approximately Noon on May 21, 2009,
The Brockport Fire Department was dispatched to a brush fire with
extension to a porch and melting siding on a house at 3447 Redman Road. The
alarm report also stated that the homeowner believed the fire was
extinguished, but wanted it checked-out. Brockport requested a RIT Team
response from Holley. Holley 2 arrived on the scene and reported the fire
appeared to be out and reported that equipment should continue-in to check
for extension. 2C23 arrived and assumed command. Brockport Engines 232 and
233 and an engine from Holley arrived on scene.
The fire originated in mulch in front of a front porch, burned up a small
pine tree scorching the porch, the porch ceiling and melting siding on the
house. The homeowners, luckily discovering the fire in its early stages,
extinguished the visible fire with pans of water. The fire department washed
down the mulch, which was also found to be smoldering at another location
along the porch, several feet from the first fire site. A porch facial board
was removed to check for extension below the porch and thermo imaging
cameras were used to verify there was no extension into the walls of the
house or into the ceiling area. No extension was found. Firefighters
remained on the scene to assist with the fire investigation.

At approximately 4:35AM Monday April 27th the Albion Fire Department was
dispatched to a reported structure fire on Route 104. While en route,
responding units were advised an elderly female may possibly be in the
building. Albion Asst. Chief Conner arrived on location and declared a
working fire. Chief Bradshaw arrived shortly after and assumed command;
Deputy Chief Sidari - Operations; Asst. Chief Conner - Interior. Carlton
Fire Department was automatically dispatched for an engine company. Chief
Bradshaw requested Holley Fire Department for a FAST, COVA ambulance to the
scene, and Barre Fire Department for an engine and tanker to fill in the
Albion Fire Station. Medina Fire was requested to send an ambulance to stand
by at AFD as well. Albion Engine 35 arrived and the first attack line went
to the east bedroom window to begin knocking down the visible fire. The
second line advanced through the front door toward the east end of the
house. The search team began a search for the resident. Engine 31 laid a 5"
supply line to a hydrant east of the scene. Tower 45 arrived and was
assigned ventilation. The fire was knocked down within the first 20 minutes.
Despite the quick action of all crews on scene, the resident did not
survive. Orleans County Fire Investigators arrived on scene and began the
investigation before the fire was extinguished. At approximately 12:30PM
Chief Bradshaw released all Albion crews, and had Barre move up their engine
company to provide assistance during the investigation. Albion was
automatically dispatched to a fire in Carlton shortly after. NYS Office of
Fire Prevention and Control were requested to the scene to assist with the
investigation. Albion Fire Department crews remained on scene until 2030
hours Tuesday April 28th, when the scene was turned over to the Orleans

Rural Fire Department needs your vote to win new fire engine from
E-One
Last fall the Newstead NY Volunteer Fire Company donated a used fire engine
to a struggling rural volunteer fire department in Oneida, Kentucky . It was
a team effort with a lot of help of some more good folks from the First
Baptist Church in Vandalia, Ohio and a group started by local Erie County
firefighters known as Hancock Hope, formed for the sole purpose of helping
other firefighters and fire departments in need.
That donated 1986 fire engine has served them well for the past six
months. One of the church members, Michael Whitby – a young, energetic EMT
himself; took it upon himself to do the right thing and nominated Oneida FD
in a contest to win a brand new fire engine from E-One Fire Apparatus.
Michael made a compelling argument as to why this small, impoverished fire
company - so much that E-One has chosen Oneida as one of seven finalists.
Here’s where you come in. To move Oneida from the “Final Seven” to the
winners circle requires that you – and everyone you know – act now and go to
E-One’s web site to vote for Oneida’s story as the best story.
To vote for Oneida’s story, click:
http://www.e-one.com/news/eone-stories/vote-for-the-best-story.htm?id=651
.
IMPORTANT: To confirm your vote, you must reply to an e-mail that E-One will
send you after you’ve cast your ballot.
Voting ends at 1:00 p.m. on April 24th and the winner will be announced at
3:00 p.m. on the FDIC show floor in E-ONE’s booth - #9104 Lucas Oil Stadium.
It doesn’t cost you anything but a few moments of your time. Your vote
could mean a world of difference to a small fire department with a big
heart. Now it’s your turn to “Do the Right Thing.”

The Clarendon Fire Department was dispatched to a barn fire on the Holley
Byron Road, just south of the Village of Holley on Saturday afternoon. Smoke was
visible as apparatus left the fire station. Clarendon 1 assumed command and
mutual aid was requested from Hulberton (1 tanker and 1 engine), Barry (1
tanker) and Holley (1 engine). Clarendon’s first due engine located in the
driveway and lines were stretched to the structure. Clarendon’s tanker arrived
and set-up dump tank operations at the driveway from which the engine took
draft. Clarendon’s second engine and rescue arrived with manpower and equipment.
Holley’s engine took a side road and located behind the structure and stretched
hand lines to the structure. The Barry tanker located with the Holley engine and
a supply line was operated. The Hulberton engine set-up approximately 1 mile
north of the scene at a hydrant and filled the Clarendon and Hulberton tankers.

The plan was to conduct training on the new ATV apparatus on the evening
of 03/24, the drill to begin at 7:00 PM at the Brockport Fire Station.
However, when Morton was dispatched to a large grass fire and requested mutual
aid from Brockport, just before 6:00 PM, Chief Scott Smith directed the crew,
about to leave with the squad, to hook-up the ATV trailer to respond along with
the squad. Both pieces of equipment have grass & brush firefighting capability.
The decision was a good one because upon arrival, it was determined that wet
fields were going to prevent the use of the heavier squads of Brockport and
Hilton for this assignment. It was no problem however, for Brockport’s “almost
in-service” new 2347. While most of the fire was suppressed, the Brockport rig
circled the entire burn area wetting down any hot spots ensuring there would not
be a rekindle. The multi-purpose apparatus proved itself early-on as an
excellent grass & brush vehicle. It will surely prove itself in many more
applications for Brockport, and surrounding fire departments, at future off-the
road EMS and fire incidents. When asked if other Brockport Firefighters would be
able to operate the new apparatus, Chief Smith replied that might be the case,
but not on the first run! He pointed out that the initial training session had
not taken place, although it was probably already underway and would continue
with hands-on training as soon as the rig returned to Brockport from the Morton
incident.

A grass fire was reported in a field, somewhat back from Redman Road near
Church Road. 2C11 was quickly on the scene and requested grass fire rigs from
Brockport and Hilton. Morton Firefighters arrived on Pumper/Tanker 216 and on
Rescue 218 and walked out to the fire area with a can, shovels and brooms and
began to beat back the flames which had burned a considerable area. After some
labor intensive efforts by the firefighters, the fire was extinguished. The
mutual aid grass rigs arrived but were unable to locate to the grass fire area
due to very wet land between the road and the fire area. Brockport had trailored
their new ATV to the scene, which has grass fire capability, was able to reach
the burned area and was utilized to wet down the perimeter of the burned area
eliminating a rekindle. All units returned to service by 7:00 PM. Fortunately
there was little wind or this fire would have spread and grown into a much
larger incident.

The Kendall Fire Department was dispatched to an electrical fire, with
possible extension into the wall, at 16063 Carr Road on Friday afternoon.
Carlton was also dispatched as a mutual assistance engine and Holley was
dispatched as a mutual assistance RIT company. A few minutes later, Morton was
requested to respond with an engine and a rescue. Later Hamlin was requested to
fill-in at the Kendall Fire Station, covering the Kendall and Morton Fire
Districts. Kendall 2 was quickly on the scene and reported that there was light
smoke showing. Approximately 4 to 6 firefighters were on the scene, prior to
apparatus arriving, and these firefighters, noting that the fire had been
knocked down, began to remove burnt shelves and cabinets near the area of burn,
and began to check for extension of the fire. A Carlton engine arrived, members
packed-up, and a line was stretched to the building. The building siding at the
point of the internal fire was removed and the hose line used to wet down this
area. The line was then moved into the interior to wet down any further fire
extension. Kendall’s engine-rescue arrived and took a plug just east of the
structure, layed-in, and placed a supply line into the Carlton engine. A second
line was stretched from the Carlton engine but was not operated. Morton arrived
on the scene, was assigned as the roof team, and opened a hole in the roof
confirming that the fire had not extended into the attic. TIC were then used to
ensure no hot spots were remaining. The fire had damaged one wall, and shelving
of one room in the building, and had the possibility of growing into a larger
fire if it had not been for the initial fire suppression. All units were back in
service by 4:00 PM. The cause of the fire appeared to be an overheated fan
motor.

At approximately 2:30 pm, Friday, March 20th Kendall was dispatched for
the stove fire possibly with extension into the wall and attic. Also auto
dispatched with Kendall was Morton for a rescue and pumper, Carlton for a pumper
and Holley for a FAST team. Kendall two was first on scene reporting a fire in
the wall with smoke showing from the eaves of a single story wood framed
dwelling. Carlton 30 took the front of the house and extended a hand line to the
front door while Kendall 34 laid a 4”line in from the hydrant 300' east of the
residence and then stretched a 4” line to Carlton 30 to feed their truck. Morton
started ventilation of the roof over the source of the fire while Kendall and
Carlton performed an interior attack by pulling the wall down and extinguishing
the spreading fire. A second attack line was stretched by Morton from Carlton 30
to back up the ventilation team and interior operations. The fire was quickly
under control with very little water needed, and Holley's FAST team was
cancelled. A full sweep of the residence was done with a thermal imaging camera
to be positive no further extension had occurred and that all hot spots were
thoroughly extinguished. Monroe 42 was on scene as well as Hamlin in our
quarters to cover both Kendall and Morton's Districts. The cause of the fire was
determined to be a malfunctioning electric fan on the stove.

I would like to announce the creation of the Western New York Public
Safety Forums, located at
http://wnypsf.proboards.com . This site has
been developed as a community for public servants from all over Western New York
to gather and exchange information and ideas. It is certainly not meant to
compete against your websites, since its' mission will not be to provide news
stories. I was hoping that you would be willing to post on your sites a link to
my forum to help spread the word about this exciting new project. If you have
any comments, questions, or concerns, please feel free to reply to this e-mail
and I will get back to you ASAP. Thanks in advance for your support!

At 3:03 am on Saturday, January 17th, Shelby Fire was dispatched to a
structure fire at 11084 Maple Ridge Road. First pumper on location Shelby 32
reported flames showing from the rear of the house. Immediately Shelby 1
requested a pumper and manpower from East Shelby, Ladder and manpower from
Medina and Fast team from Lyndonville. Chief Fearby took command and Chief
Zinkevich was operations. The first interior attack resulted in a May Day due to
a partial collapse of a roof. All 3 firefighters involved in this escaped injury
at this time we switched to an exterior attack only. Shelby 32 was moved from
the driveway to utilize Medina 40. At this time Shelby 32 froze and was replace
by Medina 11. Ridgeway was called in for a pumper and manpower, Alabama to stand
by in Station 1 and Oakfield at Station 2. National Grid was called to the scene
for live wire that had fallen across the driveway which hampered operations.
Middleport was called for a pumper and manpower at the same time Orleans 4
requested Middleport's rescue to the scene. Frozen hydrants lead us to a tanker
relay. At this time tankers were requested from: Barker, Wolcotsville, Alabama,
East Shelby, Ridgeway and Lyndonville. Medina and Middleport both had rehab
stations set up. At 4:17 am Albion and Barre were called in for extra manpower
to relieve firefighters due to the cold temperatures. At 5:46 Albion's ladder
was called to the scene from Medina's hall. When they arrived all the tankers
were sent to the Town of Shelby buildings to be put inside.
Wyoming Correctional was called in to help with hose detail and Lyons
Collision to transport the frozen hose to Ridgeway to thaw.
The fire had a substantial start upon arrival amongst several other issues
that arose; the cold, the water problems and the live wires that had fallen
across the driveway.
Our compliments go out to Dispatch and all companies involved utilized or
standby.
Tim Fearby would like to personally thank the Medina Police Dept., Orleans
County. & companies, Genesee County & companies, Niagara County & companies
involved.

The smell of smoke awakened the owners of a two story home on West Canal
Road in Brockport and they were able to safely exit the structure. The Brockport
Fire Department was dispatched to the alarm at 1:48 AM. There was light snow
with a temperature of 10 degrees during the incident. 2C23 was on the scene at
1:55 followed by 2C13 and 2C33 one minute later. 2C13 took command, 2C23 took
interior and 2C33 took operations. A working fire was declared and RIT Team from
Holley and a tanker from Clarendon and Hamlin were requested to the scene.
Spencerport responded as a fill-in company to the Market Street Fire Station to
cover the district along with Brockport’s 234, not on the fire assignment.
Engine 232 arrived on the scene at 1:57 AM and two hand lines were stretched.
Truck 231 arrived on the scene at 2:07 AM, took the driveway, and raised the
aerial ladder to support roof operations. Holes were cut to ventilate heavy fire
in the attic and top floor. An interior team advanced the first hand line into
the structure darkening fire on the first floor, the second floor and the attic.
Command declared the major portion of the fire knocked down at 2:22 AM.
Operations continued to open up to extinguish several hot spots within the
structure. There was heavy charring of a petition behind a wood stove on the
first floor, a room over the wood stove on the second floor and throughout the
front portion of the attic. An excellent stop was made given the amount of fire
in the structure as the attack team entered the building.
Water was supplied to Engine 232 from the Holley’s Engine 30 and then from
Brockport’s Engine 2325. These units were backed-up with water on Brockport’s
Engine 233 and the two tankers. Approximately 1200 gallons were used for the
firefight and overhaul. All equipment was back in service by 5:00 AM. The fire
may have been caused by a damaged stove pipe that exited the building through a
front wall into a masonry chimney. The Red Cross was called to supply housing
for the couple and their two dogs.
