The Barre Fire Co. responded to a reported garage fire about 1:30 am on Dec. 22, 2006. Upon arrival Barre 1 reported a working fire with exposures and requested a pumper and manpower from Albion, FAST team from Medina and a stand-by pumper from Elba. County fire investigators were also dispatched.
Barrre 30 hooked to the hydrant in front and handlines were stretched with priority going to the house which was showing heat damage upon arrival. The destroyed 2 car garage was quickly extinguished with lengthy overhaul and investigation following. The fire which was possibly started by a woodstove malfunction did minimal damage to the house but destroyed one vehicle in the driveway.

Around 2:00am Friday morning, Dec 22nd, a family in Kendall awoke to the smell of smoke and discovered the floor and wall in their living room on fire. Upon our arrival we had smoke showing from the first floor # 3 side of a two story newer build home. A rescue from Morton and a FAST Team from Holley were requested. Hand lines were advanced for an interior attack. Access to the fire was hampered by a brick veneer wall inside and by the chimney on the outside. Kendall and Morton crews worked to gain access to the fire both interiorly and exteriorly while Holley provided scene safety. After gaining access the fire was extinguished rapidly and extensive overhaul and search for extension was performed. Power and gas were turned off from the house and Red Cross called to the scene for two adults and three children. County fire investigators were called to the scene and early investigation points towards a chimney fire that extended into the #3 side wall. Very little water was needed to extinguish the fire but there was extensive demolition to the living room wall to gain access and heavy smoke damage throughout the residence.

The Morton Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the early morning hours of December 17, 2006. Upon arrival, 2C31, Assistant Chief Gary Zinmeister, reported that a large building was fully involved and established command. Morton responded with Pumpers 215 and 216 and Rescue 218. Hamlin responded, as the mutual assistance company, with Pumper 243. Rescues were requested from Holley and Kendall for manpower.
Mortons pumper 215 caught a hydrant in front of the structure and proceeded down a single driveway where it began a blitz attack using the mounted deluge set on the apparatus. Hamlin laid in from a hydrant east of the structure and stretched a 4" line to the Morton pumper. Both rigs stretched hand lines into the scene. Morton's rescue 218 located into the driveway & provided scene lighting. Firemen were hampered by exploding propane tanks, an open gas line and a large amount of burning product. Due to the amount of fire and the above conditions, operations remained defensive throughout the incident. The Kendall and Holley crews provided operations, firefighter safety (RIT), and overhaul support to the Morton and Hamlin firefighters.
The building housed a honey processing and candle business. The entire structure, equipment and inventory were destroyed. Luckily the owner reported that his bee stock was located outside of the building and was not harmed and that insurance would cover the loss.. RNEWS MCFW

Effective @ 17:30 on Sunday the 19th, I made a radical decision to change the email addresses. I have eliminated the EVENTS and SUBMIT emails. I will be using (1) email for all correspondence. The only thing that will be different is the spelling of the one and only email used and the subject line will contain either EVENTS, SUBMIT or GENERAL. Since SPAM BOTS are very clever at harvesting emails, I have done some research and found by encrypting the published email, the SPAM BOTS cannot "harvest" ones email and send them tons of junk in return. This is why I have deleted the emails that the SPAM BOTS have already gotten and will start with a new name. With that said, if you have saved any of the previous emails used to send me info, please visit the email page and place the mouse over any of where it says to CLICK HERE to view the new email address. It should be visible above the START button on your desktop. The preferred is to use the links provided. Thanks.....

Due to a recent increase in web based SPAM attacks, I have been forced to set up extensive filtering of all incoming emails. There are 9 emails that I receive for the 5 webs that I manage. Please, if at all possible use the address links on the email links page to send emails. Do not remove the keywords from the subject line. You can add your own words to it but do not delete what is already filled in. If you do remove it, the chances of me getting your email will be greatly reduced. You can use your FD Name in the subject line as well. The reason I ask this is to put spam in its place.....the junk mail folder. Thanks, Ralf.....

Just in case anyone hasn't seen or heard about this. This is an hour and a half program. More information can be seen about this on www.firehouse.com or www.historychannel.com

On Friday evening, October 13 at 8:00pm and again on Sunday, October 22 at 4:00pm the History Channel will be presenting "Into the Fire".

Why Do Firefighters Risk Their Lives for Us?

"Into the Fire" produced by Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, is an emotionally charged documentary that goes into the hearts and minds of firefighters to answer that question. Directed by Academy Award winner Bill Couturie, the film features firefighters from across the country who tell stories of hope, loss and dedication - and the challenges they face in an environment of tightening budgets and increasing demands. The soundtrack features songs by leading musical artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Dire Straits.

From big city engine companies to small town volunteer fire departments, go beyond the hero image for an emotional journey that will forever change the way you think about firefighters. If you've ever wondered why we do what we do, there should be no question after you watch this show.

On Monday October 9th at 1206 hrs. the Albion Fire Department was requested by the Orleans County Sheriff's Department for a Fire and Rescue equipment standby at the scene of a motor vehicle accident vehicle recovery at 2289 Kent road.

The accident occurred approximately six hours earlier when a farm dump truck, carrying corn, clipped the outside wheel of a farm tractor and lost control, tipping the truck into a ditch and losing its load. The AFD standby was precautionary while Beauman's Garage of Lockport and Lyons Collision of Medina righted the truck. Approximately 4-5 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled from a small rupture in the driver's side saddle tank, and traffic control on Kent road was taken over by the AFD Fire Police. After the removal of the truck, members of AFD assisted in clearing the roadway of mud and debris.

On September 14th at 12:30 am Kendall was called to the scene of a working structure fire at 1849 Kendall Rd. Upon Arrival we had heavy 2nd floor involvement in a two story wood framed structure that was a vacant bar and apartment house. We started with and aggressive interior attack but were soon forced to consider Fire Fighter Safety due to the weakening of the second floor roof and floors. Soon after vacating the structure the second floor ceiling collapsed. A defensive attack with master streams and attack hand lines from Kendall 33 and 30 as well as Brockport’s ladder truck was established. Morton 215 supplied Brockport’s 238. A total of 3 hydrants were tapped and used. Holley 65 and Morton 218 provided lighting and manpower to the scene. Hulberton 65 supplied additional needed manpower and Carlton 30 was our Fast team early on and manpower once we went defensive. Due to the instability of the structure and the inability to adequately extinguish the fire defensively the Town of Kendall's Excavator was called in to demolish the main building. A 24'x36' addition on the number 3 side was salvaged as well as it's contents. The fire was under control at 5:30am. Orleans County Fire Investigators were on scene and the cause of the fire is under investigation. PHOTOS

The Spencerport Fire Department lost its firehouse to a devastating fire in the middle of the night on Aug 11th. On August13th the Kendall Fire Dept. had the honor of helping Spencerport by providing a fill in Rescue Truck along with Morton supplying a fill in Pumper while Spencerport held an emergency meeting. While filling in we responded to a reported house fire on Ogden-Parma Townline Rd. Upon arrival we had smoke showing from the eaves of a single story ranch style home. Further investigation showed it was caused by cooking on the porch that had filled the attic and eaves with smoke. The family had no smoke or CO detectors so some were supplied and installed by the Spencerport Fire Dept.

On August 13th the Kendall and Carlton Fire Departments responded to a reported structure fire at 15913 Carr Rd. Upon arrival there was smoke showing from the attic of a 2 story residential structure. Access to the attic was gained and a small fire extinguished with water extinguishers. The source of the fire appeared to be caused by shorted electrical wires due to remodeling. Morton Fire Department was called for the use of their new thermal imaging cameras to check for any possible extension of the fire through the attic and walls. No further fire extension was found.

Due to the current weather condition all Live Fire Training evolutions in OFPC outreach course are suspended. This suspension is in effect until  22:00 hours Friday August 4, 2006.

In addition all other practical skill work and other outside training activities should be minimized, student should be given rest breaks every 30 minutes and replace fluids by providing cool water or any cool liquid (except alcoholic and caffeinated beverages) to workers and encourage them to drink small amounts frequently, e.g., one cup every 20 minutes. Ample supplies of liquids should be placed close to the training  area.

It is also  suggested that counties consider suspending any live fire training evolutions scheduled for their facilities that are not part of OFPC programs.

Please use extreme caution this Tuesday (8/1) as the temperatures are expected to be in the mid to upper 90's. Please remember to keep hydrated.  These conditions are not favorable for high exertion activities such as firefighting.  Preventative measures should be taken to ensure you do not fall victim to heat exhaustion.

From 13WHAM Weather ALERT:
...EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE TUESDAY NIGHT... AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE TUESDAY NIGHT. EXPECT TEMPERATURES TO PEAK IN THE 90S ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON WITH DEW POINTS IN A VERY UNCOMFORTABLE MID TO UPPER 70 RANGE. THIS WOULD BRING HEAT INDICES AS HIGH AS 105 OR ABOVE. EVEN THOUGH THE TEMPERATURES WOULD DROP TUESDAY NIGHT...NO NAIR CONDITIONED BUILDINGS WOULD REMAIN HOT...AS OVERNIGHT NIGHT LOWS MAY ONLY DROP TO NEAR RECORD LEVELS IN THE UPPER 70S. AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH MEANS THAT A PROLONGED PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. ON TUESDAY PLAN TO DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM...STAY OUT OF THE SUN... AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS. LINK

July 26, 2006 - Submitted by Rick Seaman - Kendall Fire Chief
On Saturday, 7/22 Kendall was dispatched for a possible house fire at 16203 Carr Rd. Upon Kendall 2’s arrival he declared a working basement fire with flames and smoke showing and requested a full assignment from Morton and a pumper from FHM. Upon arrival of K-33 a line was laid in from the nearest hydrant. The first Interior team reported a fully smoke charged house and located the fire in the basement. There were also multiple sites of electrical shorting and the power was disconnected. With the aid of Morton’s new thermal imaging cameras, extension of the fire up the kitchen partition was quickly spotted and extinguished. The fire was called under control within 20 minutes of the first alarm. Extensive overhaul was performed and the second floor and attic was searched for further extension, as this was a balloon type construction. Hamlin fire department filled in at our hall.

July 25, 2006 - Submitted by Rick Seaman - Kendall Fire Chief
At approximately 3:00am Friday morning (7/21) Kendall was dispatched to a working structure fire in the 1700 block of Kendall Rd. Upon arrival we had a fully involved Service garage fire with multiple explosions and roof collapse already taken place. The garage was about 500’ off the road with limited access due to vegetation overgrowth and several scrap vehicles and construction equipment. 2 hydrants were tapped and deck guns used until hand lines could be established. Morton supplied additional manpower as well as lighting for the scene. FHM was called to fill our hall. The fire was called under control after about 45 minutes, but the building was a complete loss. The fire has been deemed suspicious and is under ongoing investigation.

July 21, 2006 - Submitted by Roland Nenni - Holley Fire Chief
I would like to personally acknowledge the heroic efforts of 2 civilians and 2 firefighters who placed there lives in grave risk of death, to rescue another.  On July 16, 2006 at approx. 12:22 PM a 2 car motor vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Hulberton Road and Lynch Road in the Holley Fire District. One of the vehicles ignited upon impact causing an intense fire.  Two civilians who live in the area immediately approached the burning vehicle in an attempt to rescue the occupants. These two civilians were able to remove the driver from the burning vehicle and place him on the ground. Because of the intensifying fire they had to create distance from the vehicle.  At this point two members of the Holley Fire Department arrived on scene and approached the burning vehicle which was now was totally consumed with fire. The two firefighters were able to reach the driver under intense heat and pull him to a safer location and treat his injuries.

Without the efforts of both the two civilians and the two firefighters, the driver of the vehicle would have had no chance for  survival.

Due to the tragic nature of this accident and the healing that must begin for all parties involved, the names of both the civilians and the firefighters is being withheld. Formal recognition with the release of their names will be done in the near future.

Orleans County Man in Trouble Again
by Rich Turner, Published Jun 29, 2006

An Orleans County man who called 911 two years ago causing a massive rescue operation is in trouble with the law again. Authorities said Paul Martin, 32, of Waterport passed himself off as a medic. Albion police said Martin responded to an ambulance call, lied about his status, and drove the patient to the hospital. He is charged with criminal impersonation of a public servant, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and obstructing emergency medical services.

Two years ago, police arrested Martin after he falsely reported he was trapped in his overturned car. The search lasted throughout the night.
